Kanye West joins the ranks of celebs who donned a cap and gown this past weekend. The 37-year-old rapper went from college dropout to graduate real quick when he earned an honorary doctorate degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Honorary degrees are often given to certain distinguished individuals (i.e. philanthropists, musicians politicians, authors, etc.) as a way of recognizing their notable contributions to society and/or in their work and creative field in general. In this case, Kanye received his doctorate in Fine Arts, which makes sense as he is a rapper!
Kanye delivered a lighthearted speech, where he revealed that life would have been way easier if he had snagged his degree:
This honor is going to make your lives easier, for two reasons: You don’t have to defend me as much! And I’m going to make all of our lives easier. It is these Floyd Mayweather belts that are needed to prove what I have been saying my entire life – whether it was the sign of Paul McCartney grabbing me and saying, ‘It’s OK, he doesn’t bite,’ or the New York Times cover, or the Time (magazine) most-influential cover. And now a doctorate at the School of the Art institute of Chicago.
When I was giving a lecture at Oxford, I brought up this school because when I went on that mission to create in other spaces; apparel, film, performance, it would have been easier….if I could have said, I had a degree at the Art Institute of Chicago!
Wife Kim Kardashian, who couldn’t attend the ceremony since she was in Brazil promoting her new book “Selfish,” took to Instagram to shout out her hubby’s shiny new prize and accolade:
Dr. Kanye West!!!!!!! I’m so proud of you baby & I know your mom would be so proud too!!!!
